私はメリケ・ヴィラルド、2024年3月にヨーロッパのエストニアから土佐町に来ました。地域おこし協力隊として四国の中心である土佐町をもっと海外に知ってもらえるように頑張っています。

My name is Merike Villard and I came to Tosacho in March 2024 from Estonia, Europa. I am a local life promoter and I try to do my best to make the heart of Shikoku, Tosacho, more visible outside of Japan.

エストニア最大のデジタル新聞に、月２本のペースで記事を執筆し、日本や土佐町の伝統と人々、地元の暮らしや素晴らしい自然を紹介しています。昨年の7月にはエストニアでラジオ放送のゲストに呼ばれ、土佐町の生活について話をしてきました。また、昨年の夏にはエストニアのテレビ局の取材班が土佐町を訪れ、今年も5月にエストニアのテレビ局が土佐町の人々や彼らの活動、美しい自然を撮影する予定です。

Twice a month I write stories about Japan and Tosacho for Estonia's largest digital newspaper. Introducing traditions and people, local life and the wonderful nature we live in. Last year, in July I gave an interview to Estonian Radio, where I talked about life in Tosacho. In addition, an Estonian TV group visited Tosacho last summer. This year, in May we can expect another Estonian TV team, who will film several parts about Tosacho people, their activities and beautiful nature.

私は好奇心から土佐町の生活に浸り、高知県や四国を広く探索してきました。できるだけ多くの美しい自然を訪れ、神社や地域の伝統に触れ、ワークショップやフェスティバルにも参加しました。その体験を新聞だけでなく、フェイスブックや時にはインスタグラムでも記事にしています。

I have been curiously immersed in the life of Tosacho and have explored the wider Kochi Prefecture and Shikoku Island. I have tried to visit as many beautiful nature places here as possible, get to know Shinto shrines and local traditions, and have taken part in several workshops and festivals here. In addition to the newspaper, I also write about all this on my Facebook page and sometimes on Instagram.

自然と伝統に深く感銘を受けたので、それを他のエストニア人と共有したいと思っています。2025年の秋にむけて、エストニア人がここでの生活を知ることができる観光プロジェクトを企画しました。このプロジェクトでは、地域の人々がワークショップで自分たちの技術を共有し、宿泊施設やケータリングサービスなどを提供する予定です。

Since I have been deeply impressed by the local nature and traditions, I would like to share it all with other Estonians. For autumn 2025 I put together a tourism project, that Estonians can get to know the life here. This will give local people the opportunity to share their skills in the form of workshops and offer accommodation and catering services.

地域を活性化させる方法について多くのアイデアがあり、大規模な国際イベントも計画しています。このイベントについては、実現する兆しが見えてきたら紹介したいと思います。

There are many ideas on how to liven up local life and therefore a large international event is also planned, which may be discussed later, when the viability of this project shows more signs of progress.

地域の人々ともっとコミュニケーションを取りたいのですが、私の日本語がまだ十分ではないので、いつも日本語を学んでいます。現時点では、主に英語でコミュニケーションを取っていますが、私の母国語はエストニア語で、ロシア語とフィンランド語も少し話せます。

I would like to communicate more with local people, but at the moment my Japanese is not yet good enough. At the same time, I am learning more every day. Although at the moment I communicate here most in English, my native language is actually Estonian. In addition, I also speak Russian and a little bit Finnish.

私は大学で小学校教師と弁護士の2つの学位を取得しました。また、両方の職業に就いた経験もあります。6年前、四国八十八ヶ所巡礼（お遍路）を終えたことで、人生の転機を迎えました。趣味として約15年間、中国医学と日本の療法を学び、お遍路の後に会社員を辞めてセラピストになることを決意しました。

I have received two higher education degrees from university - primary school teacher and lawyer. I have also worked in both professions. Six years ago, I made a turning point in my life after completing the Shikoku 88 pilgrimage. After studying Chinese medicine and Japanese therapies as a hobby for about fifteen years, after the pilgrimage I decided to quit my office job and become a full-time therapist.

私には成人した息子と娘が 2 人います。娘は結婚していて3人の息子がいるので、私は祖母でもあります。私自身も大家族で、姉が2人、弟が2人います。母と父は高齢ですが今も元気です。

I have two adult children, a son and a daughter. My daughter is married and has three sons. So I am also a grandmother. I come from a large family myself, I have two sisters and two brothers. My mother and father are elderly, but in good health.

さらに信じられないことに！55歳で初めて土佐町で空手を習い始めました。練習会に2人の素晴らしい先生がいて、その指導のおかげで今では緑帯に到達しました。

And more, what is incredible! I started learning karate at Tosacho first time in my life at the age of 55! I have such an awesome training group and two amazing teachers, under whose guidance I have reached a green belt by now.

皆様にとって素晴らしい一年、そして実りある一年になりますようお祈り申し上げます。今年も皆様にお会いできることを願っています。私はいつも、エキサイティングなイベントやアクティビティ、美しい自然に興味を持っています。皆様のご指導とご支援により、日本文化についてますます学んでいます。地元の生活や文化についてさらに理解を深めるため、新しいものを見せていただけることにいつも感謝しています。イベントやお店、道端でお会いしましょう！ありがとうございます！

I have always been interested in various exciting events and activities and beautiful natural places. With your guidance and help, I am learning more and more about Japanese culture.
